Just as we have proper etiquette for in person interactions, there is also netiquette for online etiquette. Let’s push the envelope a bit and extend our netiquette to Twetiquette…proper etiquette on Twitter! Sometimes people may be unintentionally offending others just because they are not aware there are certain things to do and NOT on Twitter.
Here are 7 tips to help you mind your manners on Twitter for Business & Career Success!
1. Review Your Profile and Tweets
Take the time to review your profile, tweets, hashtags, retweets and other interactions on Twitter. Is what you are sharing or retweeting appropriate for your audience? Would you be embarrassed if a potential employer or customer saw it?
2. Use Good Grammar and Spelling
Content is king on Twitter, but grammar mistakes will leave you looking unprofessional. Take the extra time to proof read all your tweets before publishing them.
3. Be Respectful & Professional
Everyone has their own opinion, but that doesn’t give you the right to be offensive or insulting. Remain professional and respectful at all times even if someone disagrees with you.
4. Follow & Interact with Others
Twitter is very much a give & take medium, so don’t just expect everyone to follow you – make sure that you are following and interacting with relevant people as well. Follow people who have the same interests as you, are in your industry or have something that you can learn from.
5. Respect Copyright
Copyright infringements will not only reflect badly on you, but could possibly get you into legal trouble. Always make sure that any image, video or content that you post is either yours or has been given permission to use.
6. Don’t Spam
Your followers don’t want to be bombarded with self-promotion and sales pitches all day long. Mix it up a bit by providing helpful content, tips & tricks, personal thoughts or just try to spark conversations with your followers.
7. Have Fun!
Last but not least, have fun! Twitter can be a great place to meet new people, find interesting content and share your own insights. Follow other people who entertain you and don’t be afraid to let your personality show through on the platform.
Twetiquette is pretty simple…basically you are being respectful of others and doing what you would do in person as far as etiquette is concerned. By implementing a few of these NICE strategies your tweets will always be welcome in the Twitosphere!
Remember…Be NICE and treat others the way you want to be treated!
