On the Road to Brand YOU
for Social Media Marketing Success
Your Branded BIO
Previously, on Stop #2 we discussed, Your Branded BLOG on the Road to Brand YOU for Social Media Marketing Success. Today we move on to Take Your BIO from Boring to BRANDtastic! A Branded BIO will communicate your unique promise of value. Your bio is a very important component to your online presence. It will be information that others look for to get to know you better. It will determine if they want to hire you, do business with you or joint venture with you. A branded bio is much like a resume in that once you invest the time, energy or money into it all you will have to do is tweak it from time to time to keep it updated. The difference between a resume and bio is a resume lists your accomplishments in reverse chronological order. Your Branded BIO is a "Snapshot" of who you are and highlights your unique talents and skills. It helps the reader get to know you better.
(Your Branded BIO is a "Snapshot" of YOU)
It is important to invest the time into a Savvy Branded BIO. Your bio can be used on your blog/website, LinkedIn and other social media profiles, media kits, articles and anything else you have to provide information about yourself. This will save you time and create a consistent message for your brand.
In order to create a Branded BIO you must first answer this question…
What's Your Brand I.D.?
To get started with a Branded BIO you have to Know Yourself! Unearth your strengths. Identify what inspires you and your top values. Do a Brand Audit- Find your most current bio. You can use one you may currently have on a social media platform such as Linkedin or a Facebook Page. This is a great starting point as a baseline. Don't have a bio? No worries…just draft an outline of your current business and career accomplishments. Ask yourself this question…If you were reading your bio, would YOU want to get to know YOU better?
(What's Your Brand I.D.? Know YOUrself!)
Remember to Weave Yourself into It!
Weaving in and out on the highway is not a good sign but it is a must to weave yourself in and out of your branded bio. Incorporate what makes you YOUnique and things you have learned about yourself from my Free Personal Branding Assessment. Include your passions, values, skills, strengths and how you are known by others. Be sure to give examples!
Your Branded BIO should include the following key components:
1. Be Memorable! You can choose to be conversational or professional or a combination of both. Your style will show in your tone and word choice. This will impact the overall impression of your reader.
2. Be Your Authentic Awesome Self! What differentiates you or your services? You can talk about this without putting others down. Focus on what you bring to the table not what your competition doesn't.
3. Be Compelling. Share a story about yourself or an interest or passion that you have that would be interesting to others.
4. Be Relevant. Share information that is important to your target audience.
5. Keep it Short and Sweet. Use short references of relevant information. You can use the information on the "about" section of your website.
Finally, Take it for a Test Drive!
Share your Branded BIO with colleagues, friends, mentors and business partners for feedback. Once you have received feedback, you can incorporate those changes and post it on your "about" page, build out your social media profiles, use it in proposals or when applying for employment or a bid for a contract. Review it regularly as a reminder that you are Outstanding!

I absolutely love your graphics and your information is always helpful. This is a very hard task for me. I have tried repeatedly and just haven't been able to define me and my brand. I am known personally for my authenticity, but don't know if I am getting it across through my blogs,,,they seem more 'information based' rather than the humor I spin in person.

Love this Sarah, your advice is right on here – and presented in such a fun and memorable way. Taking your bio from boring to Brandtastic is classic! You are definitely a great example of someone who practices what she preaches! My kids spent a good 10 min looking at the infographic and asking me questions. They are going to be so happy to meet you in September, as will I!
